Positions

Engineer (Arduino+) {CLOSED}

Title: Engineer {CLOSED}
Position Type: part-time (20 hrs/wk); fixed term (8 weeks) with opportunity for extension
Compensation: $25-30/hour commensurate with experience
Start Date: as soon as possible
Location: remote possible; New Haven, CT area preferred
The primary tech behind the automagical interactions in Escape New Haven’s games — including lights, sounds, locks, the game operator interface, and more — is Arduino based, with some Raspberry Pi thrown in for good measure. The elements in our newer generation of games communicate using a CAN bus protocol and custom libraries. Help us continue to develop new games using these systems while our engineer is on paternity leave! This is an 8-week engagement with the opportunity to become a permanent position dependent on our financial situation and the quality of your work.
At Escape New Haven, we have been innovating in the escape room industry since 2014. You will join a talented staff with a strong sense of camaraderie — many of us meet outside of work to play board games, go to Renaissance Faires, attend each other’s shows, or just go out for drinks. While your main work will be engineering, you will also find opportunities to share & learn new skills, be part of the game ideation & design process, and apply your talents to interesting and unique challenges.
This is a part-time W-2 position with brief regular check-ins (up to once per day) and an otherwise flexible schedule. The position is paid hourly, with an expectation of 20 hours/week on average; some variance week-to-week is perfectly acceptable as long as overall project/timeline goals are being met.
  • Familiar with Arduino programming + hardware (required)
  • Familiar with CAN bus protocol, PCB design + sourcing, audio hardware, LED lighting (e.g. Neopixels), and fabrication (preferred)
  • Self-motivated and highly disciplined; able to set realistic intermediate goals in order to meet a longer-term deadline
  • Comfortable working with others (e.g., designers, fabricators, and end users)
  • Holistic approach that includes excellent documentation and training others on daily use & troubleshooting
  • Review existing code & custom libraries; ask lots of questions!
  • Produce timeline, budget, & hardware specs for current projects based on design team’s needs & goals
  • Write code & fabricate electronics infrastructure, building on current libraries & adhering to existing conventions
  • Work as part of a team to test, adjust, iterate, etc.
  • Thoroughly document new code & train co-workers as needed

Visual Storyteller {CLOSED}

Title: Visual Storyteller {CLOSED}
Position Type: part-time or full-time (20-40 hrs/wk); fixed term (4 weeks) with opportunities for future projects
Compensation: $20-25/hour commensurate with experience
Start Date: {not currently hiring}
Location: anywhere
We are looking for one to two experienced visual artists/designers/storytellers to help bring new design projects to life. Working alongside our game design & fabrication team, you will help craft the stories themselves, as well as how they are presented to players. You will work within some challenging constraints — balancing considerations like clarity, reproducibility, modularity, and budget — while having broad freedom to create something unique and exciting for our audience. Your goals will range from the specific (e.g., design a treasure map to these specifications) to the broad (e.g., help the team design a game based on an important event in local history).
At Escape New Haven, we have been innovating in the escape room industry since 2014. You will join a talented staff with a strong sense of camaraderie — many of us meet outside of work to play board games, go to Renaissance Faires, attend each other’s shows, or just go out for drinks. We have multiple new and in-process design projects that would really benefit from the participation of a visual/graphic artist & storyteller. While this is a limited-term engagement (4 weeks), if the collaboration is a successful one, we will absolutely have additional projects available in the future.
This is a part-time W-2 position with brief regular check-ins (up to once per day) and an otherwise flexible schedule. We are ultimately looking to hire one full-time or two part-time artists, so hours per week are open to discussion. Some variance week-to-week is perfectly acceptable as long as overall project/timeline goals are being met.
  • A portfolio of work that showcases your talent & style(s) as a visual/graphic artist
  • Flexibility & willingness to jump in on projects in multiple stages of completion
  • Excellent communication skills; willingness to work remotely with a team toward a common goal on a shared budget & deadline
  • Prior experience with visual art / graphic design in a team setting, especially for an interactive game/production (preferred)
  • Prior experience with printing/fabrication of your designs, especially on materials meant for heavy use (preferred)
  • Prior experience with layout & graphic design, e.g. signage & brochures (preferred)
  • Work with a team to develop story & overall experience (for early phase games), art/graphics (for later phase games), print/materials specifications, and marketing materials
  • Maintain ongoing collaboration with other design/fabrication team members, including frequent (up to daily) check-ins
  • Make adjustments & compromises as needed to complete projects on deadline and in budget
